Ask What a New Student Can Actually Do

A useful visit question is: what task did a new undergraduate complete last semester? Look for a concrete answer such as writing a test procedure, reviewing a telemetry packet, assembling a circuit board, or documenting a design decision. Ask who checked the work and how the student learned the necessary tools.

Request the joining process, expected weekly hours, and progression into a subsystem role. Open membership, competitive lab recruitment, and faculty research appointments are different entry routes. Each can be valuable when it fits your preparation and schedule.

The Mission Stage Changes the Learning Experience

A team designing a new satellite needs different work from a team testing flight hardware or operating an orbiting spacecraft. Ask which stage you would join and what milestones could realistically occur during your time at college. A launch date is a project target, not a student graduation guarantee.

Choose the work you want to learn. Testing can develop discipline in procedures and verification. Operations can develop command, telemetry, and troubleshooting habits. Early design can develop requirements and trade-study skills. A strong experience does not require witnessing a launch.

Connect the Team to Your Degree Plan

Ask whether a project can satisfy research credit, a capstone, or an elective, and obtain approval before counting it toward graduation. Keep ordinary team participation separate from formal course credit until the university confirms the arrangement.

Budget for the College, Then Evaluate the Project

Start with the actual financial-aid offer and the degree’s required semesters. Ask about project-related travel, summer housing, and whether a role is paid. A team’s sponsor funding does not automatically pay each student’s expenses.

Keep a backup plan that still makes the college a good choice if you are not selected for the first lab you approach. A documented route into meaningful work is a stronger basis for comparison than assuming a famous mission will be available to every student.

Do I Need an Aerospace Engineering Major to Join?

Not necessarily. Several teams describe multidisciplinary participation. PolySat has discipline-specific requirements for some teams, and individual research roles can require particular majors or coursework.

Does Joining a CubeSat Team Guarantee a Launch?

No. Your time on a project may cover design, testing, operations, or supporting work. Launch schedules and team assignments are separate from your academic calendar.

Are the Listed Applications Open Now?
