What separates astronomy and astrophysics programs

The degree name does not settle the curriculum. One bachelor’s may sit inside a physics department and require a heavy upper-level physics sequence, while another may put more time into observation, data analysis, or instrumentation. Compare the actual mathematics, physics, computing, and research requirements.

Research astronomer work usually means graduate study. If that is your goal, look at undergraduate research access and preparation for a doctorate. At the doctoral level, active faculty groups, observing facilities, datasets, computing, and funding are the more useful fit questions.
