How Many Online Aerospace Master’s Programs Are There?

We found 15 master’s programs in aerospace engineering, astronautics, and space systems operations where the school’s own page confirms online delivery. That is 13 of the 46 aerospace engineering master’s programs in our directory and 2 of the 4 space operations master’s programs. They sit in 10 states, 9 at public universities and 6 at private ones.

If you already work as an engineer, the number that matters is how many of those let you stay put. Five do, by their own description. The rest ask you to check how often you would need to be on campus.

Key Findings From the Online Aerospace Master’s Data

  1. 15 of 66 master’s programs are confirmed online. That covers 13 of 46 aerospace engineering programs and 2 of 4 space operations programs.
  2. 5 of 15 say the whole degree can be completed online. They are Auburn, Capitol Tech, Missouri S&T, UCF, and the University of Washington.
  3. 10 of 15 describe a coursework-only or non-thesis route for online students. You can finish those without a research thesis.
  4. The median online degree is 30 credits. Across 10 programs the range runs from 27 (USC) to 45 (University of Washington).
  5. Calculated tuition runs from $14,400 to $43,770. That is a 3.0 times gap across the 5 programs with a posted per-credit rate. The other 10 are not in this comparison.
  6. Tuition is a fraction of one year of pay. Among those 5 priced programs, the $43,770 figure equals 32.4% of the $134,960 median aerospace engineer wage, and $14,400 equals 10.7%.

How Much of the Master’s Directory Is Online?

Online master’s programs as a share of all master’s programs in each group
  • Aerospace engineering master’s 13 of 46
  • Space systems operations master’s 2 of 4
  • All master’s programs in the directory 15 of 66

Space operations looks more online because it is a small group of four programs. Aerospace engineering is the bigger pool, and 13 of its 46 master’s programs deliver online.

What Does an Online Aerospace Master’s Cost for the 5 Programs With Posted Rates?

Calculated tuition for the 5 of 15 programs with a posted per-credit rate, beside one year of median aerospace engineer pay
  • Alabama, 30 credits at $480 $14,400
  • Auburn, 30 credits at $949 $28,470
  • Missouri S&T, 30 credits at $950 $28,500
  • Illinois, 32 credits at $1,195 $38,240
  • Purdue, 30 credits at $1,459 $43,770
  • One year of median aerospace engineer pay $134,960

Tuition here is credits multiplied by the posted online per-credit rate. It leaves out fees, books, and proctoring. Purdue’s figure uses the nonresident rate, and an Indiana resident pays less. Aerospace engineers earned a median of $134,960 in May 2025, with the lowest tenth near $86,700 and the highest tenth above $205,890, across 67,710 jobs.

How Many Credits Does an Online Aerospace Master’s Require?

Credit requirement for the 10 programs with a published total
  • USC 27
  • Alabama 30
  • Auburn 30
  • Missouri S&T 30
  • Purdue 30
  • UCF 30
  • Illinois 32
  • Florida Tech 33
  • Georgia Tech 33
  • University of Washington 45

Most programs cluster at 30 to 33 credits. The University of Washington is the outlier at 45, and it is a part-time professional degree built around evening study over about three years. USC counts its 27 in units.

Which Online Aerospace Master’s Programs Can You Finish Without Visiting Campus?

Five schools say in writing that the entire degree can be completed online. Auburn’s statement covers its non-thesis route, since the thesis route needs supervised research. Missouri S&T says no campus visits are required, and Capitol Tech describes its master’s programs as 100% online.

The other ten still deliver online, but their pages describe an online option beside a campus degree. Ask each one how often a lab, exam, or residency would pull you in.

What Does This Mean If You Work Full Time?

Start with delivery, because it decides whether you can keep your job and your city. If you need zero campus time, begin with the five whole-degree programs. If a few visits are fine, the online routes at Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins, and USC are worth a look.

Then check the thesis rule. Ten programs offer a coursework-only route online, and that route is usually the one built for people with a day job. A thesis needs a faculty adviser and lab time, which is hard to schedule from another time zone.

Last, price the whole degree, not the rate. Among the five programs with a posted rate, the cheapest costs about a third of the most expensive, so compare credits and fees together. Our affordable online aerospace master’s comparison shows each calculation.

How We Built This Online Aerospace Master’s Report

  • Scope: master’s programs in the aerospace engineering, astronautical engineering, and space systems operations fields in this site’s directory (n = 66: 46 engineering and 4 operations, plus other space science master’s programs).
  • Inclusion: a program counts as online when the school’s own program page, catalog, or online-degree page says it is offered online. Federal records alone were not enough. We pulled these pages in September and October 2026 (n = 15).
  • Whole degree online: the page states the full degree can be completed online or that no campus visit is required (n = 5).
  • Non-thesis route: the school describes a coursework-only or non-thesis plan available to online students (n = 10).
  • Credits: the minimum credit total the school publishes (n = 10). USC publishes units.
  • Tuition: credits multiplied by the posted online per-credit rate, checked September 17, 2026, with no fees, aid, or transfer credit (n = 5). Sources: Alabama, Auburn, Missouri S&T, Illinois, Purdue.
  • Pay: Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, aerospace engineers (SOC 17-2011), national.
  • Left out: Cal Poly Pomona, because its live online classes come with some in-person courses. Doctoral and bachelor’s programs were not assessed for this report.
