Columbia’s Astrophysics major combines calculus-based astrophysics, advanced astronomy, and a faculty-supervised independent research sequence that can produce a senior thesis.
The major follows the standard physics sequence, adds a full year of introductory astrophysics and advanced astronomy, and supports observational, theoretical, or experimental research through ASTR UN3997 and UN3998.
Upper-level options include planetary dynamics, exoplanets and astrobiology, high-energy astrophysics, scientific computing, and astrostatistics. Observational Astronomy is one elective that uses rooftop telescopes and Harriman Observatory. Independent research is a separate, faculty-supervised option that can run for one term or continue into a senior thesis.
